I took the boat to the mainland after paying the usual 2RM rip-off and this time I got a seat further back. Unfortunately the minibus to Peneng was already fully booked and so I had to take a detour via Cameron Highlinds, which took about 2-3 hours.
After 12 hours on a boat, in a bus or waiting for either one I arrived in Chinatown of George Town. Peneng is an Island on the north western coast and easily accessible via a 4-lane-highway. The lonely planet claims there is the best food in Malaysia and it was in fact delicious. If you ever get your hands on Chicken with plum sauce you definitely wanna try it.
After my nice bungalow just off the beach I checked into a guesthouse this time. The rate was 40RM including air-conditioning which is a real bargain. Apparently I pushed the a/c too hard and so I have a cold now. Hope it will get better soon, I currently cant equaliz.
smallest room I ever had on my trip |
I really didn’t do much in Peneng. On the first day I appreciated the free wifi and caught up with some friends online. Also I figured out where to go next and instead of heading into Thailand I will fly to a small island just off Sumatra. Reason for that is the newly found out fact that the thai dive season on the west coast commences in the middle of November. Contemplating what to do and booking all the flights to make this trip possible on such a short notice took me almost the entire day. Now I am happy to include Sumatra in my travel itinerary. I am in kind of a bad mood because of the cold imagining not being able to dive on Sumatra. Unfortunately it took me several days for it to wear off, it still lasted until Langkawi.
The next day I strolled around to see what Peneng looks like and I haven’t seen a place with so few tourists.
Kapitan Keling Mosque |
In the evening I found a shopping center with a decent supermarket and so I was able to stock up on shower gel and the usual stuff. Also I bought some new clothes as they are really cheap. Camel Aktiv Wear-pants for 12 Euros. Probably a cheap copy, but we will see.

On the way home I saw Günter and Frank, the bikers I met on Pulau Kecil, sitting in a restaurant. So I joined them and we had some drinks. Cheers for the beer¸ guys.
